CHARACTER NAME: Grimoire Weiss.
AGE: 1300+ years old.
CANONNIER.
CANON POINT Ending B.
HISTORY: NIER wikia. And Then There Were None (Creation of Grimoire Weiss, content warning that it involves child soldiers, children killing children, and other violent and depressing situations). Let's Play Nier: GESTALT (Gestalt's Nier is a father figure and Weiss sounds significantly younger than in Replicant where Nier is a teenager and Weiss possesses an ancient-sounding voice. The story and dialogue remains the same between the two, but there is a difference in "feeling" between the characters).
PERSONALITY:
When Nier first encounters Weiss, he is an egotistical talking book. Through the course of the events that transpire, he still remains an egotistical talking book. Just toned down. Very slightly. It should be noted that his arrogance is not without reason. There are very few that can withstand a full assault from his arcane magic. This tends to make him overconfident about his skills, but as soon as his abilities or MP are sealed or drained, he is powerless. Yet he would never admit to as much. It is his cockiness that acts as his shield for when he is feeling nervous or anxious about anything. This comes out the most during boss fights when he is particularly boastful about just how grand a power that he wields. He feels as someone who commands such devastating arts should never show a sense of uncertainty or fear. In a sense, it is his showing of confidence that gives him actual confidence.
As far as how his smug nature goes, he demands that people refer to him by his whole name. Very few actually adhere to what it is that he wants, much to his ire. He usually goes on about how utterly remarkable he is and how kingdoms would tremble at his very name. As such, he'll complain about it from time to time – but he does admit that he has grown rather fond at just being referred to as "Weiss." Yonah even calls him "Weissey" with nothing more than an incredulous response to the nickname. He doesn't correct her; so, it would seem that he does have a bit of a soft spot, but that is just one of the few tells of it. He shows the same care and concern for Emil, who is also relatively young in personality. But to older individuals, he can have quite the sharp tongue.
Weiss tends to be one to give an insult rather than a compliment to his friends. It may very well be his general demeanor, though. He has quite the wit and starts battle of words with more than his fair share with people. Emil even comments about how often he gets into arguments with those around him – most of which have to be broken up by either Nier or the young boy. But for him, a slur on the other's personality or actions works far better than praise. He does have moments when he shows true sympathy and empathy for another in ways that are not so backhanded, however. Those are rare and far between, but nonetheless are possible. And sometimes, it is hard to tell if he is being kind or rude with his words. He has a rather sharp tongue and this tends to get him into a bit of trouble with others. Most tend to disregard because he is a floating book, but his words are nevertheless on occasion downright sassy.
But if it is not his cheek that is getting him in trouble, it is his opinionated nature. When he has a view on something, people are going to hear about it immediately – if not sooner than that. Like the times he hears about the plights of others, he would much rather focus on the reality of the situation than offer any sort of compassion or positive outlook. Commenting on the foolishness of it all first and foremost. This makes him appear callous and heartless to the plights of those around him. Nier is always quick to quiet him down when it seems as though he is going too far in what he is saying, because if he is not, he would go on and on about the topic. But there are times that Weiss shows true tact and concern for others instead of just being negative.
This comes from the fact he just has two different ways that he comforts a person. The main one would be that he begins to talk or complain excessively. This would get the person's mind off of what it is that they are contemplating on so intently. It is his way of ensuring that they are not putting so much effort into being depressed. Being annoyed is far better than sorrow, after all. As for the latter, he does offer words of real encouragement and sympathy. These are rare as he seems to feel that the person would not wish to be coddled and much rather be given some sort of driving force rather than wallow in their situation or memories.
Of course, that's not to say that he is always moved and shows improper means of being upset by someone's situation. Sometimes, he just outright does not believe he should get involved in another's life. It is their problem and if they want help, they can ask for it. But unfortunately, he is connected to a busybody who enjoys offering his hand to all those in need. It occasionally boggles his mind as it would seem like they have enough problems of their own without putting on the rest of the world's. He believes that people should do things for themselves, and feels that it is annoying to have to do things for those that can do for themselves.
Honestly, he's needlessly realistic with a positive view from time to time. When Kainé was going to let herself die after her revenge is finished, he chides her for giving up so easily. Weiss states about how a warrior of her skills should find a reason to live beyond petty vengeance. This is a complaint that he brings up from time to time throughout the entirety of the canon. Of course, when Nier invites her to join their band, he is quick to say that they should weigh all options before deciding such a thing. Weiss scolds others for doing foolish and self-sacrificing actions; his way of showing concern and hopeful the other will see reason. Such as when the foul-mouthed hussy sacrifices herself for the group, he is the first to say that he won't tell her goodbye, because he believes it would take more than turning to stone to actually kill her.
He also has an old man's view on the youth of today – commenting about how it angers him when he initially hears about a son who was worrying a father. The whole situation was a misunderstanding, however. Of course, he has been alive longer than most. His "elder" persona is shown in the fact that he rarely, if ever, swears. He seems to find those that are overly vulgar to be rather offensive, and he will be quick to say so. But he does eventually warm up to such people. Like with Kainé, she is excessively rude and foul-mouthed around the book. He scolds and mocks her openly for her lack of lady-like appeal, but it soon becomes something like friendly barbs than real insults. This returns to the previous statements about how he compliments and shows his affection for others.
Also, despite his semi-phenomenal and nearly cosmic power, he does experiences fear. He shows an immediate dread while in the manor where Nier meets Emil. The idea of ghosts and the supernatural actually seems to break the usual blasé response that Weiss has. Weiss outright lets out a scream when he encounters something he feels is "not human." Ironic given the state of the world and he is of a paranormal existence himself. But he honestly does not like the idea of death. He even comments on such during one side-quest as he wonders about his own mortality. Even though he's lived for over one-thousand years, he admits a bit of hesitation when it comes to the "great beyond." He is only reassured when he is reminded that he is a book and cannot technically die. It seems as though this is something that he has been worried on, as he comments that he has never thought on that before and seems remarkably more cheerful.
It should be mentioned, though belatedly, Weiss used to be human. He was a child soldier part of the Hamelin Organization where his job was to be injected with Luciferase that could slow down the White Chlorination Syndrome (WCS), but not prevent it, and fight Legion. WCS has two specific disease states – first, the person becomes a humanoid mindless monster that obeys the Red Eye or turn into a block of salt. Also, the disease was thought to be spread by those of Legion via bodily fluids which meant setting fire to their bodies instead of shooting them. In "And Then There Were None," Weiss recalls when he first killed one of Legion at the age of ten. He never quite got used to the whole murder of these creatures, because they still looked like humans.
This hesitation does transfer, too. When Nier is becoming hateful toward Shades and even willing to kill those that take the shape of humans; Weiss comments on his distaste for such a thing. He is not particularly fond of the idea. This does not mean that he won't do it, but he certainly is not happy about it. He even seems a little disturbed when he discovers that he has actually been murdering the souls of humans at the end. Yet he does not stay his hand when the Shades appear before him again. It is necessary, and while it may haunt him, he is not one to abandon his friends or give up halfway on a cause. For each ending, Weiss gives up his mind, body and soul, in order to stop the Shadowlord. This shows his level of dedication to those that he deems as loved ones.
He was turned into Grimoire Weiss when he was nineteen years old. This may explain his entire personality. It seems like he does not hold any real desire to become human, however. Or rather, he may have been programmed to hold no wish to return to his human life. Really, back when he was human, he did not even know what he would be doing if he was no longer a soldier. Nine years of killing Legion, he did not believe that he could ever have a normal life, but he just wants to escape the fighting. He even doubted that he would be allowed to escape when offered, but it was a brief chance of freedom and so he took it. Foolishly. But he has accepted his role as a Grimoire, and takes seemingly great pride in it all.
As for how he would respond to being in a human body, again, he has been without a human body for 1300+ years. He never once, in canon, comments about how he misses a body – not even when all his memories return. Nor does he angst about it in extra information. Weiss is now Grimoire Weiss and that is how he is known to his friends. This is something that he holds quite dear in his own way. Perhaps, he was programmed to never want his body back, but he does not want it back as Weiss is who he is. He no longer has any connection to his human life, though he seemingly now remembers it. There will be fear and confusion, which he will cover up with his usual bravado. What is important is that he knows who he is and will hold steadfast to that fact.
Finally, just because he has been alive for so long, he actually is still constantly fascinated by the world around him. Architecture and magic are what get his most avid attention. Nier has to constantly remind Weiss that he is a talking book and should not find such sights to be that interesting, but nevertheless, he seems to take his existence with little wonder. Beyond his usual attitude about how grand and marvelous he is, he does not seem to be all that amazed about what he is. And now that he will become human, he probably will have a lot to say about that.
CANON POWERS:
Weiss was once a human turned into talking book that contains a plethora of arcane magic. It seems as though that will now be something that he can draw upon now that he is human. He still has the memory and the Sealed Verses, which means he should be able to call upon this same power since the only thing that has changed is his body and not his magical capabilities. But there are some great drawbacks to his abilities – both when he was a book and now that he is in human form. Ignoring the former and focusing on the latter, he was able to once edit the Sealed Verses that were contained in his pages. This changed the manner in which the spell worked (e.g. lowered the cost of MP, added a paralyzing effect, etc). Since he is no longer a book, his powers are now without these boosts since the only way that he would be able to have these specific words added to his spells would be to tattoo the phrase on his body at this point.
Another drawback is that while he does constantly regain MP after using his magic, it is a rather slow process and he is completely vulnerable without it. The only means that he would have to gain more would be to kill some weakened enemy. ("Blood is sound. Sound are words. Words are power.") Any enemy that falls to Weiss's hand, he is capable of sucking all the blood out of it so long as his magic was the last to pass through the body. It seems to have some small hold of the blood which will help to recharge his MP. Other than that, he has no other means beyond waiting and running. Well, not running, but quickly floating from place to place.
He considers it beneath him to be walking around and as such, he hovers about the air. This does not seem to take any sort of MP, but he cannot fly any great distance. It is really just a means to get from one place to the next. He cannot even extend this ability to anyone else to have them fly from town to town. If anything, it is just to further his point that he is above walking around. He did once have a human body before he was infused into his book body. As such, he does have memories of how to walk and run, but he just does not quite feel up to doing such. It's been too long for him, and with a new body, it just isn't something he's up to try.
More bad news for Weiss, since he is in human form – he cannot "equip" four of his Sealed Verses at the same time. Meaning, he cannot quickly switch from one spell to the next without some lag. His body simply would not be able to handle it. At best, he can only "equip" two Sealed Verses at a time. Also, his spells can be interrupted if he is attacked while trying to cast. This does nothing to his MP, but it does buy enough time to knock his weak body out before he is able to launch his full assault.
As for what these Verses are, they vary from offensive to defensive. As for defensive, Dark Wall creates, as the name implies, a giant wall to protect against all attacks. Dark Phantasm creates a doppelganger that can temporarily attack, but is rather weak and ineffectual unless given enough time to charge the spell. Dark Gluttony is a spell which allows him to absorb magic and fire it back at the one who shot it – so long as he's facing the direction of the person is. Finally, there is nothing in the Sealed Verses that does healing. If he's hurt, he's hurt and needs to find means to tend to his injuries – end of story.
Only two temporarily slow time during charging – Dark Lance and Dark Hand. During charging, Dark Lance begins to accumulate more and more lances to launch toward a specific target. This is particularly tricky if the target is fast since once aimed in a specific direction, they cannot be changed in their course. Somewhat easy to dodge, but far easier to misaim. Dark Hand is the same as its name – giant hand that strikes out toward an opponent. If the opponent is right in front of Weiss, the attack is useless since the "hand" is a few feet in front of him. Also, it does not have that great of reach and tends to swerve off to the right or left at any given time. And while it can generate multiple "hands" to strike, it requires a lot of careful timing and planning to be able to actually hit someone with this attack.
Dark Execution and Dark Whirlwind also are charging spells, but can be interrupted easier than Dark Lance and Dark Hand because neither slows time. The former launches spires out of the ground toward enemies that are circling – it is meant as crowd control. Negative, it is very slow to charge and can easily be canceled. Hence, it will be rare if ever used. Dark Whirlwind causes multiple magical blades to spin around the person using it. Another crowd control spell, but it causes little damage and a person can hop over the spires to the magic user in the middle. Also, no other spell can be used while Dark Whirlwind is being used.
There are finisher moves that he can do. This can only be done under three conditions. One, he has to have drank a significant amount of their blood (e.g. been injured greatly from his magic and he is draining from that wound). Two, he has to have a full MP bar. Three, he has to not be interrupted in his casting. These moves can be particularly devastating; such as, creating large dark magic infused hand to lash out to literally crush the throat of a giant monster or throw a giant monster repeatedly into walls. However, the drawback is that he cannot use any magic for three days in game after. He'll still be able to float from place-to-place as, again, that requires no MP, but attacking and defending are no longer in his cards. And for a better understanding what his magic looks like: all magic attacks.
Also, he is capable of learning all sorts of languages. Honestly, he encounters the language of Façade for the very first time and after a lengthy tour given by one Fyra, Weiss is capable of understanding and speaking to the people. And she taught it to him using sign language and gestures. Or rather, he seems to translate for Nier. It would seem like he can do this with any sort of language, but would not particularly appreciate being made a travel book and used in such a way. If it is meant to help carry on with whatever mission that is presently happening, he'll be a lot more helpful but other than that, he would rather not be forced to learn languages for the sake others verses for the sake of himself.
This mostly alludes to the encyclopedic knowledge that he possesses – and the idea that he knows every base language there is on earth. Reason why he has this knowledge is because he would be awakened in the future; this much is pretty much a given. To possess every base language and be able to eventually understand the people who wake up should the language evolve in the future. He has other knowledge that is locked away in his head, too, but it's mostly on earth back in the late 21st century and not really anything particularly useful in the 31st century.
OTHER: He is now being given a human body in game.

CRAU INFO: Not applicable.
MAGIC ABILITY: Shadow manipulation. Significantly nerfed from what he used to be able to do, of course. But it's best to go with what one knows. Also, he'd be able to float after people, which is really what I want it for 'cause he's not used to being on legs.
ANY WEAPONS/MAGICAL ITEMS?: None, since he is the magical weapon, haha.
ANY PETS?: Nope.
